The teaching of English as a foreign language is important in a country where international tourism is the principal source of foreign revenue. This is especially necessary for that part of the population that is directly involved in the tourism trade. With the English Teaching Project, in rural communities near protected areas we have begun a program of training in English as a Second Language.
We work with children in the community of Montezuma on the Nicoya Peninsula, in the province of Puntarenas. Montezuma is a tourist area where many services are found. School days are from Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 1:15pm, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays being the English teaching days. The rest of the weekdays, volunteers will assit the school principal with elaboration of dinamic material, daily activities and curriculums.
We work with international volunteers to support the schools of these communities in teaching English, principally to students in the first and second grades. The volunteers assist the teaching of English, prepare English-language educational materials, and help the teachers.
