10. TEACHING ENGLISH
To the children in Montezuma, Cabuya and Las Delicias

The main objective of this project is to support Montezuma, Cabuya and Las Delicias’ rural schools, by teaching English to the 1st and 2nd cycle, with the participation of foreign volunteers. Also, this will enable a great experience for the volunteer, to participate in the real life of rural children and the true costarican culture, habits and traditions.

Montezuma, Cabuya and Las Delicias communities are located in Nicoya Peninsula, in the North Pacific area of Costa Rica.

The three communities are very different from one another; Montezuma, a very touristy place where you can find a good number of services. Cabuya and las Delicias are smaller rural communities surrounded by forests, where its inhabitants make a living with agricultural and sustainable management practices. The weather is very humid and the temperature ranges from 26 to 28° C.

Around 140 tree species have been identified here, among them: Espavel, Sonzapote, Ojoche, Guacimo, Colorado, Madroño, Jobo, Guarumo, Indio Desnudo, Flor Blanca and Pochote. There are animals like: squirrel, deer, monkeys (howler, whitefaced), coati, agouti, coyote, ocelot, among others. Some of the birds are the brown pelican, frigate birds, brown booby, etc. Some of the marine fauna has a high quantity of individuals of fish, crabs and mollusks, specially in Cabuya and Montezuma beaches.

Work to do:

• Teach English to children of specific schools.
• Prepare the training materials for the English classes.
• Support occasionally the rest of the teachers of the schools.

The Absolute Natural Reserve Cabo Blanco is located approximately 11 kilometers from Montezuma, 3 kilometers from Cabuya and 6 kilometers from Las Delicias; this is the oldest protected area of our country, and there are some interesting trails you can visit, and enjoy some of the remaining areas where you can find this type of forest in the Pacific region of Costa Rica.

In your days off, you can enjoy some quality beach time or go to Cabo Blanco or, just visit the other communities. In Las Delicias there is no beach to visit, though.

A local family will host the volunteers in their home; it is a very simple room with the basic amenities. Near the house, there are small groceries stores and a paid phone.
The meals will also be provided by the family, so the volunteer will share with them the culture, language and traditions of the “ticos”.
